Regenera Activa: An Efficacious Way To Combat Hair Loss

Hair loss is a problem that currently plagues about 70% of men and 40% of women worldwide.

While it is designed to physically protect us from external forces and regulate our body temperature – our hair has more so become a symbol of our youth and vitality in today’s society.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that losing one’s hair can be detrimental to our self-esteem and negatively impact our social lives.

So, why is hair loss such a complicated issue?

Hair loss can be triggered by a multitude of factors

One of the biggest reasons why hair loss is complex is due to the plethora of reasons that can trigger the condition. There are also many different types of hair loss – including those that are sudden or gradual, or when scarring and inflammation are involved.

Here are some of the most common causes of alopecia (hair loss):

  • Genetics (in the case of androgenetic alopecia – this accounts for 95% of all hair loss cases)
  • Age
  • Stress (e.g. illness, surgery, and emotional stress)
  • Nutritional deficiencies (e.g. iron deficiency and extreme dieting)
  • Hormonal changes (e.g. pregnancy, thyroid issues)
  • Taking various medications (e.g. blood pressure pills and anti-depressants)
  • Hair styling and chemical treatments

A normal person has about 120,000 to 150,000 hair follicles on their scalp, and they each go through a natural hair growth cycle. Consisting of the anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting) phase – hair loss occurs when there is a disruption in one of these stages, such as when the telogen phase is extended for long periods of time.

In the case of androgenetic alopecia, it is largely due to an androgen hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), where an excess of the hormone triggers hair follicles to miniaturize and go into the telogen phase. If not treated, the follicles will gradually stop producing hair, leaving the area completely bald.

Identifying the cause of your hair loss will then determine the best treatment needed for you to stop further hair loss or encourage hair regrowth.

The first-line of therapy: topical and oral medications

The first-line of therapy for treating alopecia is usually minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia) – both of which are FDA-approved for treating hair loss in men.

Spironolactone is another common medication that is prescribed to females to help decrease androgen production. The aim of these medications is to either increase blood flow, block androgen activity, or prolong the duration of the anagen phase so that hair loss is reduced

Although these medications have been shown in studies to be effective – they often come with unwanted side effects such as scalp irritation in the case of minoxidil, and sexual dysfunction and birth defects in the case of finasteride.

In addition, patients often need to be dependent on these medications for the rest of their lives in order to maintain their results. It also takes about 6 – 12 months initially to notice any effects.

Laser treatments work best as a complementary treatment

Studies have shown that using lasers correctly on the scalp can help to improve blood supply to the hair follicles and regulate the signaling molecules and growth factors to stimulate hair growth.

In our clinic, we like to utilize the Fraxel Thulium 1927nm that is able to deliver small doses of laser light to hair follicles without harming the surrounding tissues. Doing this induces the wound healing process and boost collagen regeneration. Because of its ability to penetrate deeper into the dermis than topical medications, studies have shown that using laser treatment together with a topical treatment offers significant improvements!

While most fractional lasers work great as an acne treatment and acne scars laser– they too, work wonders to encourage hair regrowth by rejuvenating the skin, reducing inflammation, and stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles.

In fact, our laser procedure is backed by almost 18 years of clinical and scientific studies – where patients have seen over 40% – 60% increase in hair density and an 85% success rate in putting a pause on hair loss!

Hair transplants are great, but they aren’t for everyone

An effective and more “permanent” solution that is increasingly becoming more common is the FUE and FUT hair transplant.

Although it is rare to see hair transplants being used as the first-line of therapy, it is often able to provide results when topical and oral medications or laser treatment results are unsatisfactory.

Essentially, it involves extracting hair from one area of the scalp and transporting it to the bald areas in an effort to create a fuller hairline.

While hair transplants offer fantastic results due to the advancements made in the technology, it is still a highly manual procedure that is largely dependent on the doctor that you work with.

In addition, not everyone is an ideal candidate to undergo a hair transplant, and just like topical and oral medications, patients need to wait for at least 3 – 4 months before seeing any results. There is also the chance of bleeding, swelling, and infection.

Regenera Activa: an all-round, powerful hair loss treatment

A treatment that closes the gap between topical and oral medications as well as hair transplants is Regenera Activa –  an autologous micro-graft treatment that is based on capillary regenerative therapy.

Taking stem cells from the patient’s own scalp and processing it in a special solution before injecting it in the areas experiencing hair loss – it encourages dormant and inactive hair follicles to wake up and triggers cellular regeneration – essentially working to treat hair loss from within!

Approved by major health regulatory authorities such as the FDA and HSA in Singapore – it is a 30-minute procedure that has minimal side effects and zero downtime. Since the micro-grafts are taken from your own scalp, there are also no risks of any rejection or allergies.

With Regenera Activa, patients are able see results in just 1 month – clinical studies have shown improvements in hair density, hair count, and scalp coverage as early as 14 days! The treatment is ideal for both men and women, and can also be used in combination with topical and oral medications, laser treatments, and hair transplants to further nourish the hair follicles.

While Regenera Activa is a great option for majority of patients, it is not advisable for severe cases of alopecia, in which a hair transplant surgery is still the best better option. Regardless, it is an effective treatment that doesn’t come with the disadvantages of other conventional treatments.

Treating hair loss

Unfortunately, there is no cure for alopecia. However, there are many ways that you can restore a full head of hair.

The first step is to identify the main cause of your hair loss – in some cases, your doctor will begin by tackling the underlying factors first before proceeding with the actual treatment.

It is important to note that a treatment that works well with one individual may not work well with another. This is why we pride ourselves in customizing our treatment plans to every patient – taking into account their age, skin type, hair condition, and goals to help them achieve thicker, stronger, and fuller hair!

There are plenty of studies showing how a combination treatment approach provides faster and better results with minimal complications. This includes the use of topical minoxidil, anti-androgen agents, growth factors, hair transplant surgery, and laser treatments. This is likely due to the combination of different mechanisms of action that enhances the efficacy of the treatment.

This is why we offer such a wide range of hair loss treatments including the Pilose hair growth serum, laser treatments, Regenera Activa, and FUE hair transplant – where we are the first in Singapore to bring in the ARTAS robotic hair transplant technology!
